The Tie That Bonds

Chapter 28

After touching the ground, she fell to her knees, burying her face into the depths of her hands. Tears spilled from her cheeks as she silently cursed Heero. He had broken his promise to her. He swore that he would survive, but he didn't. . .and it was all because of her. The pain in her heart was like nothing she had ever felt before. . .and at that instant, a vision of a accident flashed before her eyes. . .then a image of Heero pulling from the wreck without serious injury.

"Mia." She looked up at the familiar voice. Noticing the familiar green eyes soothed her slightly as Trowa kneeled next to her and hugged her. "Where's Heero?" He asked, while rubbing her back in comfort. She couldn't answer; her tears were choking her words. Duo looked around the immediate vicinity, in hopes of catching a glimpse of his friend. All he saw was the growing fireball in the distant. He looked back to Trowa to find that the Latin was also looking in that direction.

"You don't think. . ." Duo's voice trailed off.

"Only one way to find out." Trowa answered and pulled Mia to her feet. They headed back to Duo's Jeep and sped toward the fire. As Mia watched the passing scenery, she couldn't believe that Heero was gone. Her heart wouldn't allow her to believe it. She kept telling herself that he was alive and will be okay, but the closer they got to the impact sight, the harder it became to believe these childish wishes. She tore her eyes from the scene to look at Trowa. The lean body had been cut and slashed severely, and she wondered how that had happened. Finally, they arrived at the spot. Duo and Trowa immediately jumped from the Jeep. Facing in opposite directions, they cupped their hands over their mouths and yelled Heero's name as loud as they could.

She couldn't understand why they were doing this. Couldn't they see the large bond fire several yards from them? There was no way Heero could have survived that. . .no one could. Resting her head against the window, she allowed her mind and body to go numb as her tears spilled down her cheeks. She watched Trowa through blurry eyes as he moved further away from the Jeep, still calling to Heero.

Suddenly, she heard something. She wasn't sure, but she could have sworn that she heard Heero's voice. She anxiously climbed out of the Jeep and looked around, wondering where the noise had come from. After finding that nothing nor anyone was there, she started walking aimlessly. Maybe she had misheard. . .perhaps she only thought she had heard him speak since she wanted to so badly.

At that moment, fire trucks, police, and ambulances arrived at the scene. Mia didn't notice them as she continued walking in the opposite direction of Trowa and Duo. While she wander deeper into the fields, the two men returned to the Jeep. They were both a little surprised to find that she was no longer in the vehicle, but entering the corn field. Trowa watched her intently as he stopped Duo from calling to her.

"What's wrong?" Trowa didn't answer as he followed the teenager into the corn. He kept his eyes glued to her back as he followed her path. Duo trailed at the end, wondering what was going on. Mia walked with her head bowed and her eyes closed. She allowed her heart to guide her. The further into the field she walked, the closer she felt she was getting to him. With her heart racing, she began running through the tall crop. Trowa and Duo found it difficult to keep up with her speed, but somehow they managed.

Trowa was the first to arrive, and nearly ran into Mia's back. Duo emerged next, and plowed into the taller man. He peeked around both Trowa and Mia to find Heero laying among the corn. He wasn't moving, but at least he wasn't blown into a million pieces. Mia dropped to her knees on one side of the man, Trowa kneeled on the other. Duo ran back through the corn to retrieve paramedics.

"Heero?" Mia called as Trowa felt for a pulse. "Is he?"

"He's alive. . .but slipping." The Latin assured and scanned the body. Though there were few visible wounds, he knew that the Japanese man was worse off than he appeared.

"Heero." A familiar little girl called and the Japanese man tried to remember where he had heard it from before. He couldn't think straight, the pain from his body was disturbing his judgment. "It's time to rest now Heero. You've lived your life. You deserve it. Look into the light Heero." He could feel light wash over him. It was so warm, and removed the pain from his body. "Don't resist Heero. . .look into the light. Come play with me in the field that we met. Mary's waiting for you too." At this, he could hear a familiar dog barking. "Come on Heero, there's flowers to pick." He could feel himself giving in to the invitation.

"Heero." This voice was familiar too. . .but different from the girl's voice. "Heero, hang on. Please. You promised." It was Mia. . .she was crying. "Don't leave me." Heero turned from the warmth.

"You've lived your life." The first girl encouraged. "Now you should rest. You've done all you can. It's time to leave Heero."

"No. I can't. I don't want to go." Heero told the girl. "I made a promise. I must keep it."

"But Heero, going back will only be all that much more painful."

"I want to live. . .I have a reason to live now. . .I want to be with them. Let me go back."

"Heero?" It was Trowa. No further encouragement needed, he was suddenly shocked with the pain of living. His body was weak and shredded, but he attempted to open his eyes. If he could at least look into the eyes of the two people he loved, then he would be able to find the strength to continue to live. Gathering every ounce of energy left in his body, he slowly opened his eyes. He stared into the face of Mia and Trowa for a moment before blacking out completely.
